”We will serve the Lord!”

“I have always loved the scripture in the book of Joshua that says, ‘But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord’ (Joshua 24:15). However, if you take the time to read the preceding verses and understand their meaning, you will find that Joshua’s message to the children of Israel that day is quite profound. Many of us quote this verse and even have it displayed in our homes, but what does the rest of the passage say to us?

Joshua 24:14-15 goes like this: ‘Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’ Amen!

So, is it enough to say that we will serve the Lord? Is it enough to merely speak these words? The real question is: do we serve other gods? Do we place others before our Lord? Do we straddle the fence when it comes to our integrity and honesty? Do we linger in sin, willfully doing what we know in our hearts is wrong? By doing so, we are serving other gods, serving our sinful selves, and following the ways of this world. We are taking advantage of God’s grace and forsaking His goodness by living lukewarm lives. Scripture says that the Lord would rather spew us out of His mouth (Revelation 3:15-16). Amen!

So this morning, I ask all of us: whom are we serving? Are we following the Lord? Are we living our lives for Him? Are we listening to His gentle, still small voice? Sin is sin, and living without God isn’t living at all. Living according to the ways of this world is living a life of lies and deceit. To be right, we must do right. To please God, we must do what He desires from us daily. We must live our lives always pleasing our Father so that we can stand before Him unashamed and truthfully declare, ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’ Amen!

My prayer is that each of us can honestly speak this from the depths of our hearts, knowing that we are serving the Lord and not any idol or graven image (Exodus 20:4). We are serving the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. Amen. I pray that we can all make and declare this declaration over our lives daily, always walking and abiding in the Lord and His will, living for Him alone. In Jesus’ name, I ask and pray, Amen and Amen.

Be blessed today, my dear sweet friends, and remember, wherever you go and whatever you do, be a light for our Father. Much love to you all, Mandi.”
